Job Title: Senior Materials, Corrosion & Inspection Engineer

Location: Lagos, Nigeria

About the Role

• We are seeking a Senior MCI Engineer with extensive technical expertise in Oil & Gas to implement and ensure compliance with all Materials, Corrosion, and Inspection (MCI) requirements, in line with company standards, industry codes, and HSSEQ regulations, while safeguarding asset integrity and reliability.
• The ideal candidate has at least 8 years of upstream offshore experience, possesses strong expertise in corrosion management, welding metallurgy, offshore codes (DNV, API, ASME), and multidisciplinary project execution in offshore or deepwater environments.
• This position offers the opportunity to contribute to high-value projects while ensuring technical excellence, safety, and long-term asset reliability.

Responsibilities

• Ensure full implementation of Materials, Corrosion, and Inspection (MCI) requirements across the Bonga FPSO asset operating envelope, maintenance activities, and brownfield modification projects. Confirm that all deliverables meet project specifications and MCI standards.
• Drive the execution of the Asset Corrosion Management Strategy, including monitoring, maturation, and deployment of value-adding MCI technologies that enhance asset reliability and performance.
• Respond to MCI-related technical queries from operations, maintenance teams, and vendors, providing clear and timely guidance.
• Execute MCI activities through all project phases—detailed design, fabrication, testing, installation—and support commissioning in line with Company policies, standards and discipline controls.
• Provide technical assurance and ensure completion of all MCI deliverables defined in the Project Controls and Assurance Plan (PCAP) to the required quality standards.
• Monitor material testing and oversee the integrity of corrosion barriers for the FPSO topsides, subsea hardware, and umbilical systems.
• Contribute to the development and review of fit-for-purpose Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), materials management procedures, and quality plans for maintenance and brownfield modifications.
• Identify, document, and drive lateral application of MCI learnings and best practices from internal and external projects.
• Support the Management of Change (MoC) process to safeguard technical integrity, safety, and efficiency.
• Manage interfaces between MCI activities and other engineering disciplines, including Subsea Hardware, FPSO, and Umbilical teams.
• Participate in technical reviews—HAZID, HAZOP, constructability reviews—providing expert MCI input to ensure safe and efficient project delivery.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of MCI technologies, industry codes and standards, and best practices to ensure effective materials selection, corrosion control, and inspection strategies.
• Ensure proper documentation and control of all MCI-related records, including reports, certificates, and inspection data, to support audit readiness and regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate with Shell’s global MCI community to apply current tools, technologies, and strategies in corrosion and materials management on the Bonga Asset and associated brownfield projects.
• Demonstrate authentic and visible leadership in HSSE, diversity and inclusion, competence development, and cost-conscious engineering practices.
• Ensure all MCI activities comply with HSSEQ requirements and promote a strong safety culture across project and asset work sites.
• Enforce Shell and IOGP HSE policies and procedures at company and contractor worksites.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent, preferably in Materials & Metallurgical Engineering.
• COREN registered or eligible for COREN registration.
• Strong technical knowledge of offshore facilities design, fabrication, installation, pre?commissioning, and commissioning, with a significant role played in at least one major offshore project involving FPSO design and installation.
• Demonstrated expertise in materials selection, corrosion control, coating systems, cathodic protection, inspection strategies, and integrity management for subsea, pipeline, and topsides systems.
• Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in upstream E&P projects, with strong exposure to offshore design and execution environments.
• At least 8 years of direct experience in materials engineering, corrosion management, and inspection for offshore or deepwater facilities.
• Good understanding of welding metallurgy and fabrication practices, with demonstrated ability to review and approve welding documentation (WPS, PQR, WPQ), assess weldability, and resolve welding?related quality issues for offshore, subsea, and pipeline systems.
• Familiarity with welding and fabrication codes/standards relevant to offshore work (e.g., ASME Section IX, ISO 15614/9606, API 1104, DNV?ST?F101, AWS D1.x as applicable), and associated NDT requirements (RT/UT/PAUT/TOFD/MT/PT) and acceptance criteria.
• Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams.
• Demonstrated ability to identify optimization opportunities that reduce operating costs (e.g., reduced chemical injection requirements) and enhance corrosion and integrity performance.
• Familiarity with project delivery challenges in Nigeria or similar operating environments.
• Solid understanding and application of MCI?related industry standards and codes (e.g., DNV, API, ASME).
• Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with relevant engineering tools used for materials, corrosion, and inspection workflows.
• Good understanding of personal and process safety principles and their application in offshore engineering activities.
• Strong communication, influencing, and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage confidently across disciplines and with external stakeholders.
• Strong planning and execution capability, able to drive tasks to closure and meet project milestones.
• Ability to remain composed under pressure, exercise sound judgment, and provide clear technical leadership.
• Skilled in managing multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities while maintaining technical rigor.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to coach, motivate, and deliver results through others.
